To raise the financial literacy of the public, the Government, commercial companies, professional bodies and educational institutions have been working closely to promote financial education. At EdUHK, a team led by a number of financial scholars from the Department of Social Sciences (SSC) used innovative means to advocate the importance of financial knowledge. Their efforts have won them the Gold Award for Corporate Finance Education Leadership in the “IFPHK Financial Education and ESG Leadership Awards 2022”.

To pay tribute to commercial firms, non-profit organisations, and individuals that have made significant efforts in improving financial literacy levels in Hong Kong, the Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong (IFPHK) launched the annual “IFPHK Financial Education Leadership Awards” (the “FELA”) in 2018. An award presentation ceremony was held on 29 November 2022 to present various awards to the EdUHK team and other recipients of the “IFPHK Financial Education and ESG Leadership Awards 2022”.

Professor Christina Yu Wai-mui, Professor (Practice) of SSC, represented her team members—Dr Tan Weiqiang, Dr Amanda Chu Man-ying, and Dr Eric Law Kim-fai—to receive the Gold Award for Corporate Finance Education Leadership during the ceremony. IFPHK recognised the EdUHK team’s contributions and efforts towards promoting financial planning education in Hong Kong for the good of the community. Each corporate awardee was assessed based on 12 criteria including deepening understanding about financial education through research, and promoting financial knowledge through print media, training courses and other communication channels. The EdUHK team met eight out of the 12 criteria, becoming one of the corporate awardees.

Financial literacy has become an important part of our education, and is all about educating people to make well-informed financial choices and to be a financially responsible person.

Professor Yu said, “Financial literacy has become an important part of our education, and is all about educating people to make well-informed financial choices and to be a financially responsible person. To promulgate financial knowledge, our team members carried out research projects in financial education, contributed articles to newspapers, organised online educational activities and games for the public, and offered a training programme for single women. At EdUHK, we conducted a survey to investigate the habits of our students when using credit cards. Our team also led students to organise workshops and exhibitions on financial education, and supported their participation in financial education activities organised outside the campus by non-profits.”

Mr Joseph Chan, JP, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the HKSAR Government, was the Guest of Honour at the presentation ceremony. Over 100 industry representatives joined the ceremony to witness the naming of the “Best Corporate Financial Education and ESG Leadership of the Year” and “Corporate Financial Education Leadership” awardees.
